Preparing for Inktomi and Get Return Visitors

Helping You Build a Better Website

Editor's Note

Hello Site Builders,

Are you ready to lose 25-30% of your search traffic? That number might not be perfectly accurate for your site, but for many it represents the Google-powered traffic sent by Yahoo! to many websites. Yesterday came Yahoo!'s strongest indicaton yet that it is indeed going to replace its search results from Google with those of recently acquired Inktomi.

Peter Crowe, search producer for Yahoo! Australia, has said that the company has started testing Inktomi search results against Google results. With Yahoo!'s earlier statement that it did not want to be reliant on a third party provider, this makes it seem almost undeniable that Yahoo! will soon begin serving Inktomi search results instead of those from Google.

What can you do to prepare for the change? Test any keyword optimized webpages against Inktomi results at an Inktomi-powered engine like HotBot.com. Re-optimize as necessary, and make sure you're using meta tags - Inktomi's crawler is the only major that still reads and uses meta tags for search result rankings.

Unlike Google, Inktomi gives webmasters much more flexibility in testing optimization changes and getting content indexed with its paid inclusion programs that provide 48-hour respidering of full websites. If you've got the time to optimize and test frequently, paid inclusion may be worth the cost once Yahoo! starts serving the Inktomi results. Prices and providers can be found here:
